System Software
A computer is controlled by systems software. Operating systems provide this control, while utilities help to maintain the system. Note: this is different from "applications software" like word processing software (e.g Microsoft Word)
Systems software is software that governs the computer system. It:
- -controls the hardware, including any peripherals
- -allows other programs (applications) to run
- -provides an interface for the user to interact with the computer
- -maintains the system
There are two kinds of systems software to consider:
- -operating systems
- -utilities
