A target audience is the person or group of people that the final product you are creating is aimed towards. It is important to know who the target audience are, as the product may not be appropriate for them. A target audience can be categorised by:
A new brand of men's perfume is being promoted called ‘Notorious’. Who is the target audience for this product and why?
Age – need to be clear about the age group. (E.G. 6-12, 12-18, 18-40, 40+) • Gender – male/female, trans-gender, gender neutral • Location – local, national, international (e.g. music event) • Ethnicity – background, culture, race, religion, language • Income – Affects the type of product but also where it is available from. • Accessibility – Hearing and sight difficulties.
Don't generalise and assume that will be useful. For instance, generalising to say your audience is "old people" is not saying enough. A 12 year old might think 20 is "old"! Be specific. Avoid describing audiences from your personal viewpoint or opinions as this could also be interpreted as prejudice or discrimination.
